<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">For a piece of furniture to have a chance of surviving without cracks appearing after it's been in the home for a while, the timber should be brought to a balanced moisture content with the home environment. We say it has been acclimated. Centrally heated homes will generally have humidity around 40 to 60%, and a piece of wood left in the home will settle with a moisture content of around 8 to 12%.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This was the inspiration

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">These figures aren't greatly significant, but what is is that wood will contract as the moisture content lowers. By far the vast majority of this movement is across the grain, and this is the what can cause problems. Consider a mortise and tenon joint, where the grain direction of the components are at right angles to each other. The mating, long grain, glue surfaces will expand or contract in different directions to each other, as the moisture content changes. Either the glue or the wood will end up breaking, and with modern adhesives it tends to be the wood.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">So, I shall be taking the first chance I get to make a start on building the first table. Watch out for updates on social media, video on YouTube, and backup information here on the blog.

I don't know why, and I'm not sure how I can change this.
Happy woodworking for now, MitchMitchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00978836784034894527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7221112775748493919.post-35754877413668645342015-12-06T04:43:00.000-08:002015-12-06T04:43:38.015-08:00New Build Coming Soon<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I shall be making a table for my Get Into Woodworking channel soon. This will demonstrate some more woodworking techniques, and furniture construction. The design will be flexible, allowing you to scale it up to a dining table, or down to a doll's house table, but I shall make it as an occasional, or side, table.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Please send me your thoughts on what you would like me to build it out of. The options are from free pallet wood, through spruce and pine, to native British hardwoods.Mitchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00978836784034894527noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7221112775748493919.post-83463488755440559382015-10-29T13:47:00.001-07:002015-10-29T13:47:13.556-07:00How to Make a Leather Strop - In 60 SecondsMitchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00978836784034894527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7221112775748493919.post-5736070608626439482015-10-29T13:39:00.001-07:002015-10-29T13:39:20.181-07:00Tool Nut Foam Backed Abrasives and Abrasive Blocks - A ReviewMitchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00978836784034894527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7221112775748493919.post-62004676498154539352015-10-29T13:36:00.001-07:002015-10-29T13:36:48.253-07:00Axminster Rider Sharpening Station Kit - A ReviewMitchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00978836784034894527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7221112775748493919.post-42524415706444763562015-10-23T04:25:00.001-07:002015-10-23T04:25:44.406-07:00Kanna Setup - Japanese Hand Plane SetupMitchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00978836784034894527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7221112775748493919.post-91287421912940006602015-09-02T04:06:00.002-07:002015-09-02T04:06:46.724-07:00Lack of Interest<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Due to the lack of interest in the Get Into Woodworking channel, I'm not able to devote much time to this project.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I know that some of you really like it, and I'm passionate about getting more people into woodworking, no matter what their budget.
As I near completion of the second project, I can see a chance to put in some time doing the much needed update.

Hopefully the videos will have been sufficient to get you started enjoying some woodwork.

The updates I hope to include here will reinforce the lessons taught in the videos, provide further information on techniques, and give details of the projects.Mitchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00978836784034894527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7221112775748493919.post-13427748919382289552015-03-02T11:56:00.001-08:002015-03-02T11:56:24.422-08:00Shop 2 Support<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Please take a look at my Shop 2 Support page
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">If you want to try woodworking, or have started but would like some basic instruction, then my "Get Into Woodworking" YouTube channel is a great place to begin.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I've been making furniture for over a decade, and hosting "WOmadeOD - Made in Wood with Mitch Peacock" on YouTube since the summer of 2013, where I've posted well over two hundred videos on woodworking. However, some of my subscribers asked if I could make some instructional videos to cover the basics of woodworking - a foundation, if you like, upon which to enjoy the plethora of woodworking videos and sites on the internet, and to develop more advanced woodworking skills. The "Get Into Woodworking" channel is the result, and this blog is a companion resource.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Videos are great, but sometimes the written word and still pictures can tell a more thorough story. The channel and the blog can both stand alone, but some of you may find if beneficial to follow both.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Due to time constraints, the two may not always be at the same stage (as I write this, the first video has already been available on YouTube for a few days), but I hope they will never be too far apart.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">You are most welcome to subscribe to the blog, and receive notifications of new posts. You may also wish to visit my main website at www.WOmadeOD.co.uk.
